FURTHER INFORMATION

Meningitis is an infection of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord. It can be serious and you should contact your GP or 999 if you have any concerns.

Symptoms can vary and do not necessarily appear in a certain order. Symptoms include headaches, being sick, a rash that does not disappear if you roll a glass over it, temperature, stiff neck, bad reaction to bright lights and possible seizures.

Viral Meningitis will usually result in a full recovery but bacterial can result in long term side effects including hearing loss, co-ordination problems, seizures and even loss of limbs. It can be fatal if not treated early enough. There are vaccines given to children that offer some protection but consult your GP or call 999 if your children is seriously ill. Anti-biotics, fluids, oxygen and pain killers are also used to reduce the impact.
