FURTHER INFORMATION
Fifth disease or slapped cheek syndrome is a viral infection that usually lasts 1-3 weeks although it can last longer. It is common in kids aged 5-15.
Usually starts with a hugh temperature, runny nose, sore throat and headaches. A red rash will often appear on one or both cheeks which then spreads to the arms, chest and legs. The rash can be raised and itchy.
It will usually disappear in 2-3 weeks but can last longer. Rest, plenty of fluids, paracetamol or ibuprofen for the temperature, headaches and joint pain. You can also use moisturizer on itchy skin. Speak to your pharmacist about itchy skin and any other symptoms. Avoid aspirin for kids under 16.
